Trending is a breaking news segment in television and radio broadcasting. Typically, when an event warrants it, the broadcaster will alert its network affiliates to prepare to interrupt their own non-news programming, or in the case of national networks, the newscast itself. The network will then open a new graphic, often with a distinctive music cue, and a news anchor will introduce the story at hand. In the case of an event that requires extended coverage, lower thirds and other graphics may be altered to convey a sense of urgency. Breaking news may also be announced through a special ticker during normal programming, lessening the need for cut-ins or even regular newscasts.
