Trending is a current news segment on many major television and radio programs, often appearing in the lower thirds and overlaid on top of other programming. It may be a short report, or one that goes on for several hours, or even days. It will usually include an analysis of the breaking story, often with experts in-studio or via phone or satellite. When a breaking news event occurs that warrants interruption of other current non-news programming or, before 24-hour news networks existed, regular daily network newscasts, a national network will alert its affiliates to stand by and interrupt with a countdown sequence to allow the affiliated stations to switch over to the network feed.
