Breaking news is an event that warrants the interruption of non-news programming (or, in the case of network news, a scheduled newscast). Often, breaking events require immediate, widespread coverage and thus will interrupt regular programming at numerous stations. Such breaks are more common on 24-hour news networks, but may also occur on cable and broadcast television stations. The breaking news is usually accompanied by an alert crawl on the lower thirds and/or a countdown sequence that will allow station affiliates to join the network feed for live reporting.
