A breaking news story is an urgent piece of information that requires a national broadcaster to interrupt regular programming (such as a primetime newscast) in order to provide live coverage. The interruption is typically signaled by an on-screen graphic that reads “Newsflash,” or, on 24-hour news channels, by a special ticker labeled as “Special Report.” Depending on the event, this may be followed by a short montage or an entire segment of the breaking news story, often accompanied by a distinctive news anchor voiceover. In recent years, some networks have also used lower thirds to convey breaking news updates throughout regularly scheduled programming, lessening the need for cut-ins.
