Trending is an area on the site where we talk about what’s happening right now in news and culture. From time to time we may also feature an article that focuses on a particular topic or issue that we think is important to our readers.
Breaking news is a television or radio news story that is so urgent that it requires a temporary interruption of regular programming to report on it. This type of coverage is most commonly seen on 24-hour news networks, though in North America, until the 1990s, breaking news was typically reserved for extremely urgent events requiring nationwide coverage, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy or severe weather events requiring immediate, ongoing emergency coverage (such as tornado warnings). During a breaking news event, the network typically alerts its affiliates by telling them to “stand by” for an interruptive newscast. The network then pauses its regular broadcast and switches to a countdown sequence, allowing its affiliates to join the feed.
