When a breaking news event occurs, and it is considered important enough to interrupt normal non-news programming (or, in the case of network affiliates broadcasting their own local versions of a national network’s newscast, a regular scheduled newscast), it will be preceded by an opening graphic with a distinctive music cue. The network may also send a special ticker to affiliates, indicating the story at hand and asking that they interrupt their own programming with the special report. Depending on the nature of the breaking story, it may be followed by additional analysis and commentary from reporters on-site or in-studio.
