About Current News
Trending is a news segment that focuses on stories that are currently grabbing public attention. This can be anything from the death of a celebrity to the newest celebrity romance. The segment is often a short video clip or a short interview with an expert on the subject. Sometimes it can even be a short piece of audio, such as an audio snippet of a speech or song. When a story is trending, it will often appear in the lower thirds of the screen. Before the advent of 24-hour news networks, breaking news events would require stations to interrupt non-news programming or regular newscasts with a special alert. This was known as a newsflash or a special report. The use of this type of break in programming has since been reduced, as most major network newscasts now feature a dedicated ticker for breaking stories.
