The term “current news” is used to describe a news report, which can last from a few minutes to several hours. There are many different formats for news reports, including live and recorded broadcasts. Some news events last for several days, as with the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963, or the September 11 attacks in 2001. In some cases, networks also integrate analysis into the story, involving analysts from studios, by phone or via satellite. During sustained coverage, networks may even suspend regular commercial advertising in favor of continuous coverage.

Breaking news is often used to describe events occurring in the world today, such as the recent North Korea crisis or the August 2017 Paris attacks. The term is often diluted by the fact that many people prefer watching streaming content to watching traditional television. Streaming platforms like Netflix and Hulu have an edge over traditional broadcasters, and news networks have recognized this. But, despite the advantages, there is no universally agreed-upon definition for “breaking news.”

A special report format often includes an internal alert service. This service notifies all affiliates of an event, and the network feed will switch to a reverse countdown that starts at five seconds after the broadcast starts. Local television stations often do not provide this service, though. Those networks and local stations that offer reverse countdowns for current news often do. They will likely resume broadcasting the newscast after the coverage concludes. They may even join the “extended edition” in order to offer viewers another way to consume their local newscast.
