A breaking news event occurs when an urgent, time-critical news story requires the immediate interruption of regular non-news programming (or, in the case of national network newscasts, their affiliated station affiliates’ local newscasts). This is often accompanied by a countdown sequence on the screen to give time for any stations in progress to switch to the incoming feed. A newsflash or special report graphic is then displayed, often with a unique music cue, and the report begins. In recent years, 24-hour news channels have introduced “Special Report” tickers that allow selected breaking stories to be presented during regularly scheduled programming, eliminating the need for a complete cut-in.

Historically, breaking news events that warranted interruptions of current programming were generally only those that required nationwide coverage and therefore a large number of television and radio station broadcasters to interrupt their regular programming at the same time.
