During breaking news events, a national network will interrupt regular non-news programming (or, in the case of 24-hour news channels, their regularly scheduled newscasts) to deliver a live report on the developing story. The newscast pauses for the duration of the break, which may last only minutes or extend for hours and even days in some cases, as long-form reporting is needed to fully cover a breaking story. If a breaking story is of sufficient national interest, the network may suspend commercial advertising during sustained coverage of the event. During these reports, station identification of the network affiliate is often overlaid at the top of the hour rather than through the usual station imaging promo or program reminder.
