Breaking news is a broadcasting event that occurs when an urgent and significant piece of news breaks. This news item may require a network to interrupt non-news programming or a regular newscast for live coverage and analysis. Alternatively, it may be announced through a breaking news graphic or alert crawl during a regularly scheduled newscast. Traditionally, breaking news has only been interrupted for major events that warrant nationwide coverage, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, or severe weather events requiring immediate, ongoing coverage, such as tornado warnings. Until the advent of 24-hour cable and satellite news networks, such interruptions were rare, with the exception of the assassination of President Kennedy in 1963, which prompted national stations to interrupt their regular programming for live coverage.
When a breaking story occurs, the program’s title and/or theme song are changed, and a countdown sequence begins, which allows network affiliates to switch to a network feed. The countdown also gives the viewer a sense of urgency and sets up the content of the report.
