Breaking news is an alert on a television or radio station that interrupts regular programming to provide live reporting of a news event. It is similar to a newsflash or special report and often involves an anchor in studio with additional commentary delivered via telephone, satellite or other means. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, breaking news interruptions were a rarity and reserved for the most serious events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which elicited widespread coverage and required numerous stations to break away from their normal programming. During breaking news reports, lower thirds and other graphics may be altered to emphasize urgency and provide a clear point of differentiation from regular program content.
