Breaking News

The term “breaking news” describes news that’s reported in real-time, as events occur. Breaking news often focuses on high-impact or urgent stories like national disasters, political events or major investigations.

A journalist’s beat is a specific area of coverage, such as politics, sports, crime or business. Journalists who specialize in their beat can build up in-depth knowledge and powerful connections that allow them to report more informed, impactful stories.

Short for user-generated content, UGC is any type of text, video or image that is created by a reader or customer rather than a professional creator (think reviews, social media posts or testimonials). Journalists love to use UGC to add authenticity and human interest to their articles, but it’s crucial they verify all UGC before publishing.

An article that accompanies a main story, usually providing additional details or a different perspective. Think of a sidebar that expands on a policy change in the main article, for example.

A snippet of text or quote from an interview that’s bolded, larger and set in a stylized font to grab attention and stand out. This is a common element in many headlines, bringing personality and insight into the article.

A top editor is the ultimate decision-maker, steering the direction of a publication and setting the tone for every article, headline and column. They’re also the one in charge of vetting all editorial content and making sure it meets editorial standards.
