When an event occurs that is so newsworthy as to warrant interruption of current non-news programming or even regular network newscasts (at least, in the days before 24-hour news networks), stations will usually alert their viewers by running a special graphic on air and over their own station identification. A countdown sequence will then begin, informing affiliates that the network news feed is about to be interrupted. This is usually followed by the usual news anchor introduction, and if the story is particularly serious, the regular commercial advertising may be suspended for sustained coverage. Various names, such as Newsflash and Special report, have been used for this segment.
