Trending is the name of a news report on an ongoing story that is gaining popularity on social media platforms. The term is also used to refer to the emergence of a topic on the agenda of a country or region, which might be related to politics, economy, society or culture. Trending can be presented as a standalone segment or within a current newscast. A trending graphic is often accompanied by a distinctive music cue and a countdown sequence, to allow network affiliates time to switch over from their regular programming. The use of trending is often referred to as “breaking news”, though this term also encompasses events that require interruption of non-news programming, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963, which prompted numerous stations to interrupt their programs with a special report.
