Breaking News is a term that refers to a current news event that warrants an interruption of normal non-news programming, or a live segment during a regular television or radio network newscast. The network will usually alert its affiliates to the breaking news through a countdown sequence, and then the newscast will stop with a graphic indicating that there is a breaking story that requires an immediate interruption. Often, the graphic will be overlaid on top of a lower third that normally contains station imaging and the program’s name. Depending on the urgency of the story, Breaking News may last for only a few minutes or for several hours or days.
