When a breaking news event occurs that requires immediate, ongoing coverage, national network television broadcasters may interrupt regular non-news programs or, in the case of some 24-hour news channels, their live programming, to provide special reports. This is often known as a “Newsflash” or “Special report” and it may use a distinctive opening graphic with a distinctive music cue. It may also include a countdown sequence for any network affiliates to switch to the news feed. Such interruptions used to be very rare in North America, but they have become more common since the advent of 24-hour news networks.
