Breaking news is news coverage of an event or development that is so urgent that it requires a station to interrupt regular non-news programming to report it, or, in the case of network affiliates, to pause their regularly scheduled broadcast and run a special segment. The announcement of breaking news is usually made with a “newsflash” or special report graphic, often accompanied by a unique music cue and lower thirds to convey a sense of urgency.
