Trending is the process of breaking news events on a network or station’s feed in order to interrupt current non-news programming, or in the case of a 24-hour news channel, to suspend a live broadcast for sustained coverage. The news event must be highly urgent to warrant this type of interrupt, such as an immediate threat to human life or a severe weather event. Broadcasters often use the graphics of Newsflash or Special report, with distinctive music cues, and may alter lower thirds and other graphics to imply urgency. Until the advent of 24-hour news networks, such interrupts were generally reserved for extremely important national events like the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy.
