Whether you’re a broadcaster, journalist, student or an average citizen, there’s a good chance you’ve heard the term “breaking news” used to describe a story that’s breaking on the news. Sometimes, “breaking news” refers to a news story that’s old, but usually it means a story that is so important that it deserves to be broadcast live.

The process of breaking news on radio is very similar to that of television, but radio stations are often careful about relaying stories during play-by-play broadcasts of professional sports.

When a breaking news event occurs, the local station’s director may choose to revert to the network feed. If the story is about a local event, the station may send a reporter to the scene. They may cut away to a video of the event, or they may pass the coverage to a local reporter who’ll provide more details as the story unfolds.

If the coverage is on a national network, the broadcaster may pause for a few seconds to allow other network affiliates to join the feed. When the coverage ends, the network may switch back to the newscast, or it may begin new programming.

When the news ends, the anchor or reporter will remind viewers that more details will be available on their local news. They may also direct viewers to their station’s website or streaming news channels. If there’s a special event on the horizon, the station may send a breaking news graphic with music.
