Breaking news is a term used to describe an event that warrants the interruption of current non-news programming or, in some cases, a regularly scheduled newscast. It is typically announced with a countdown sequence and a network feed will be paused to allow affiliates to switch over to the breaking news coverage. The newscast will open with a distinct music cue and a graphic that conveys the urgency of the story. In addition, lower thirds and other graphics may also be altered to signal the breaking news. Breaking news may last only a few minutes or, in the case of a major national or international story, it may continue for hours or even days.
