A shortened version of the lead paragraph in a news story, it answers the five Ws (who, what, when, where and why) and typically appears at the top of the page. It is the most important information in a piece of news and helps readers decide whether to read further.

An organization that supplies syndicated news to multiple publications, typically via a wire service. These are the engine rooms of the news world, collecting and feeding press releases and breaking news to journalists around the globe. The Associated Press and Agence France-Presse are two of the most famous examples.

A person who offers expert opinions and analysis on current events, specific topics or trends. They often add context, interpretation and a dash of personality to the mix, making them an engaging, thought-provoking source.

The percentage of people who land on a news site or article and leave without reading further. A high bounce rate is a bad sign and can indicate that the content isn’t relevant or interesting enough to hold readers’ attention.

A journalist who specializes in a particular area of the news industry. Often, they’ll have strong relationships and in-depth knowledge of the subject that allows them to deliver more impactful coverage and deeper insights than their peers.
