Breaking news is coverage of a significant event that warrants an interruption in non-news programming or, in the case of 24-hour news networks, regular broadcast news programs. The interruption is often marked by a graphic with a distinctive music cue, followed by a live report from a news anchor or, at a television network, a news editor. At radio stations, breaking news is usually announced through a countdown sequence and lower third graphics that indicate the program has been interrupted.
