Breaking news is an event that requires immediate coverage on television, radio, or online. A breaking news story can be a single item or multiple items relating to current events occurring now or in the near future. It may be accompanied by graphics, audio and/or a voiceover. When an emergency occurs, the national network will usually alert all affiliates to interrupt their regular programming for a special report. If the news event warrants a prolonged interruption, a countdown graphic is used and the station imaging promo or program reminder is paused. This is a departure from earlier times, when interruptions of non-news programs were reserved for severe weather events (e.g., tornado warnings) or when a breaking news story was so significant that it required an immediate interruption in the form of a cut-in or alert crawl during regular programming.
