Until the emergence of the 24-hour news channel, such break-ins were generally reserved for national or global events that demanded nationwide coverage requiring many station interruptions.
Among the more well-known examples are the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963, and severe weather events such as tornadoes and hurricanes.
