A breaking news event is a news story that warrants an immediate interruption of non-news programming or, at the very least, a delay of regular television and radio newscasts. The interruption may be a short, urgent newsflash or a full break with the network’s national feed, which often features a countdown sequence to allow affiliate stations to switch over to the special report.
