Breaking news is a type of television or radio coverage that follows an event that requires urgent attention. Normally, a breaking news report will interrupt current non-news programming, or occasionally a regularly scheduled newscast. If a national network is running a newscast when an event occurs that requires immediate attention, the network will usually begin to count down allowing local affiliate stations to switch over to the feed before interrupting with a special graphic and distinctive music cue for the breaking news story. This is common at 24-hour news networks, which have anchors on-call to interrupt programming for events of extreme urgency such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963.
