Breaking news is a term for an event of national significance that warrants the interruption of regular non-news programming (or, at times, even regularly scheduled newscasts) for live reporting. The interruption may be short or may last for hours or even days. Until the advent of 24-hour news channels, such breaks were generally reserved for extremely urgent events, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which prompted nationwide coverage and required multiple television stations to interrupt their non-news programming. Often, a special ticker will appear on screen and music cues are modified to create an appropriate sense of urgency.
