When a major news event occurs that warrants an interruption of current non-news programming (or, in the case of network newscasts, a pause in a live broadcast to allow affiliate stations to switch over to the national feed), a countdown sequence is typically used to give viewers a chance to prepare for an impending break. When the countdown is complete, the network will often use a special graphic and distinctive music cue to signify that an emergency report is being transmitted, or that a “special report” is being introduced. Occasionally, a breaking news story will be tracked through a scrolling crawl during regularly scheduled programming, lessening the need for cut-ins and special reports.
