Breaking news is the televised coverage of a story that warrants an immediate interruption in regular programming (or, at a minimum, an alert crawl during normal broadcasting) to report on events as they happen. Until the advent of 24-hour news networks, this was typically reserved for extremely serious national news stories that required stations nationwide to interrupt their regular schedules to deliver the report; notable examples include the assassination of John F. Kennedy and severe weather events. In the case of an important breaking story, station imaging promos may be shortened or replaced with a special graphic. In addition, lower thirds and other graphics may be altered to convey a sense of urgency.
