There are several sources of current news, including television, radio, newspapers, and blogs. The news cycle has been moving from linear to streaming for decades. Streaming has made video news ubiquitous. It reduces the scarcity factor in the media equation, which makes building a news library economical.

While streaming news has proven to attract mass audiences, it has also been a boon to niche viewers. In some cases, it has served as a gateway to cable TV for those who were commercial-averse.

Streaming news can be customized for each viewer. For example, users can sign up to receive email notices of upcoming news events. They can also block specific topics, express their feelings, and even follow trending topics.

Streaming allows viewers to watch news anytime and anywhere. This has been especially important for those who work or travel.

While free news streamers may be promoting cable-quality news, they are actually asking consumers to cut their cable subscriptions. The networks have already invested hundreds of millions of dollars in streaming operations. These news organizations have high hopes for the future.

Streaming also has the potential to change the way political news is covered. As more political outlets stream, voters could be sucked deeper into political silos.

However, online video streaming won’t be bound by costly negotiations with cable companies. Moreover, new overtly political news operations like One America News and Fox News Channel are likely to compete for streaming viewers.

Broadcast news has always been a profitable business. But commercial-averse viewers might opt out of paying for it.
