During breaking news events, television and radio stations will interrupt non-news programming to provide continuous coverage of the story. Depending on the importance of the event, coverage may be limited to a few minutes or last for multiple hours or days. In the case of extremely urgent events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, networks often interrupted their regular newscasts and used a Newsflash or Special Report graphic instead of the normal station identification promos. Many 24-hour cable and satellite news channels have anchors available to interrupt live and use lower third graphics for breaking stories.
