Breaking News

A breaking news story is a television or radio broadcast that interrupts normal non-news programming (or, in some cases, regularly scheduled newscasts) to cover an event that is occurring in real time and requires immediate coverage. Such interruptions of current programming are common at 24-hour news channels, which have anchors on-call to report on urgent stories. Traditionally, such breaks were reserved for extremely serious events, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, that required nationwide coverage and prompted numerous stations to break into regular programming to air live reports. Breaking news is often identified through a graphic indicating that the program will be interrupted, accompanied by a countdown. NBC, for example, has recently begun using “Special Report” tickers to cover breaking news stories during regularly scheduled programs, reducing the need for cut-ins.
