Following President Biden’s positive Covid-19 test, many health officials are sounding alarms from coast to coast regarding another summer surge. The U.S. this week passed 90 million reported Covid-19 cases since the pandemic began. In the last two weeks cases are up about 16 percent and deaths are up 28 percent. Many school districts are focusing on “back to school” and some are now resurrecting or reconsidering mask mandates.

Breaking news is often an interruption to programming. Even a highly rated show with a few minutes left on the air may be interrupted by breaking news. ABC’s April 2017 Shayrat missile strike interrupted an episode of Scandal. The network also sometimes provides its talent with a pre-emption cue for an evening newscast. These interruptions are scheduled for a few days before the actual event. A local affiliate may then decide to return to the network feed or join on an “extended edition” of the program.
Newspapers have several ways to deliver current news. In print, the headline is the major story. It is usually the largest bold print on the centerfold and is designed to grab the attention of potential buyers. Online, news is also presented in a format called trending. The trending news is largely based on the number of hits on a web page. These stories often have little impact on society, but they are reader-driven. Current News provides a summary of recent events.
Breaking news can include events in August 2017 or the North Korea crisis in 2017-18. Despite the fact that breaking news is generally synonymous with all news, 24-hour news channels have diluted its meaning to mean nothing but filling the time of viewers. Therefore, the term has become redundant. Some people prefer to use the term “Just In” instead of “breaking news”.
