From time-to-time, an event occurs that warrants immediate national or global coverage. This is referred to as Breaking News and typically involves a story that requires an interruption of regular non-news programming or a live feed from the network news anchor. A breaking news report is typically introduced with a graphic and distinctive music cue, or by an alert crawl on a television screen. On radio, the broadcaster may play a special announcement or pause a program and ask that affiliated stations “stand by” to switch to a live network news feed for the report.
