Often, a reporter must be the first to get news about an event that’s happening in real time. These are known as “breaking news” stories, and there’s fierce competition to be the first to cover them. The problem is that often, journalists in a rush to get the story out have a tendency to make mistakes and misreport. This has happened to NPR, for instance, when they erroneously reported that Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords had died during a shooting.
When reporting a breaking news story, make sure to get the information directly from the people who have been there. Don’t rely on eyewitnesses, for example, who are panicked by what they see. And always confirm any statements from sources with authorities, who may be more reliable.
