Breaking news is an event that elicits national, or sometimes worldwide coverage, requiring that the network interrupt regular non-news programming, or in some cases, regularly scheduled newscasts to cover the story. It is often marked by a special opening graphic, music cue, and a countdown sequence to allow affiliates to switch over to the national feed. Prior to the emergence of 24-hour news channels, such breaks were often reserved for extremely urgent events, like the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which prompted a nationwide outpouring of coverage that forced numerous stations to interrupt their programming. The graphic also sometimes includes a “Newsflash” or “Special report” ticker.
