As the search for a missing U.S. service member intensifies in Iran, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps released new photos appearing to show wreckage of the downed U.S. fighter jet that the missing American was on board. When a news event takes place that warrants an immediate interruption of regular non-news programming, or even regularly scheduled network newscasts (and in some cases, the newscast itself), it is known as Breaking News. This is particularly common with 24-hour news networks, which are able to interrupt their regular programming at any time to provide coverage of breaking events. This type of news coverage is typically announced through an alert crawl during current programming and through a “Newsflash” or “Special Report” graphic, with a distinctive music cue used for each event. Alternatively, network affiliates may announce the Breaking News via station imaging or an overlaid text crawl during regular programming.
