Depending on the story, breaking news can be used to describe a live event, a story that is of wide interest to the public, or news that is not yet available in a traditional newscast. The term is also used to describe the news as it is reported, often accompanied by an “alert” service.
News reports can be brief or last several hours. Sometimes, the news may be passed to a reporter at the scene of the event. Information may also be disseminated through an internal alert service.
Local news stations may choose to join the network feed to provide coverage of a breaking event. They may have the option to start an evening newscast, or they may break away from the network feed. They will likely return to the network feed once the coverage is completed.
Breaking news is usually interrupted by other programming, but sometimes programs may be joined in progress. Typically, programs that last more than 20 minutes will have to be rescheduled. In addition, commercial advertising may be suspended.
Breaking news is often accompanied by music that emphasizes the urgency of the story. The anchor may also announce the fact that the story will be covered more in-depth on local news. During these moments, the lower thirds of the opening graphic may be altered to convey the sense of urgency.
News coverage is usually sketchy because there is not much available at the time. It can also be problematic to find out more later.
