About Current News
Trending is a term used to refer to breaking news stories that are rapidly developing. This type of news usually requires an interruption to non-news programming, or a delay to regularly scheduled newscasts. In the past, these breaks were typically reserved for extremely urgent events that demanded nationwide coverage, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, and were known as “Newsflash” or “Special report.” The network feed will then pause while affiliated stations switch to the breaking news story, which is often preceded by an opening graphic and distinctive music cue. In more recent times, many networks have begun to use specialized tickers to break news stories during regular scheduled programming, reducing the need for cut-ins.
