In television and radio broadcasting, a Breaking News report is coverage of a current event that warrants an interruption of regular non-news programming (or in some cases, regularly scheduled newscasts). The event at hand may be of such urgency that it interrupts national network feeds, causing the station’s affiliates to join the network’s feed using a countdown sequence. In this case, the program will often be overlaid with a special graphic and distinctive music cue. The term breaking news also applies to special reports on a single event that may require sustained coverage for hours or even days. Prior to the rise of 24-hour news networks, this was generally restricted to extremely urgent events such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, which caused nationwide interruptions of programming on many stations.
