Breaking news is a television or radio story that is so important or time-critical that it demands immediate coverage. It is often presented on network news programs and their affiliates through a countdown sequence followed by an opening graphic and music cue, or in the case of 24-hour news networks, by an immediate interruption in regular programming. During breaking news events, lower thirds and other graphics may be altered to convey a sense of urgency. In the past, such breaks were reserved for extremely serious and widespread events such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, which required nationwide coverage requiring stations to interrupt their regular programming.
