Breaking news is often confused with “live news.” Breaking news can refer to events occurring immediately and widely, such as the North Korea crisis of 2017-18. The term has lost its meaning because of 24-hour news channels and commentaries that fill the space. It can also refer to no news at all, meaning no breaking events. Here’s how to avoid confusion:

Breaking news may interrupt regular programming. Even highly rated shows can be interrupted by breaking news. A good example of this is the April 2017 Shayrat missile strike that interrupted ABC’s Scandal episode. Broadcast networks are required to keep viewers informed, despite the fact that they might be competing for viewers. However, in an effort to increase audience loyalty, the local stations can make up for lost time by incorporating special topical graphics and announcing the break.

During breaking news coverage, broadcast networks and local television stations may continue to show a live shot of the anchor or anchors. The local television station may then cut to the story, with an anchor reminding viewers to check the network’s website or their local cable news channel. At this point, viewers may also see a full wrap-up of the story. Similarly, after the anchor wraps up the story, they may rejoin regular daytime and late-night programming in progress. In addition, since digital television has made it easier to receive news, there is an increase in viewing options. Currently, some daytime programs are broadcast on an auxiliary digital subchannel, which airs in conjunction with the main signal.
