Current News is a term used to refer to breaking events or stories that are of such significance that they require the temporary interruption of regular programming. In the past, this often required a cut-in with a crawl or alert graphic, but since the rise of 24-hour news channels that have anchors on-call, they are able to interrupt non-news programming to cover breaking events. Typically, this is done using a countdown sequence that lets network affiliates know they are being switched to the national feed and then a ticker that lists the most important facts of the story. In some cases, this may last for hours or even days.
