A breaking news event is a significant news story of a sudden or developing nature that requires immediate attention by broadcasters. It typically interrupts non-news programming or, in the case of a 24-hour news network, regularly scheduled live newscasts. Breaking news events may also require the insertion of a special ticker, or lower third graphics, during regular programming to convey urgency. Until the advent of 24-hour news channels, programming interruptions for urgent stories were rare and often limited to a few key events, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Often, the news would be covered through a network feed that would require affiliate stations to interrupt their own programs for an in-studio reporter.
