As TV news has lived on cable for decades, the new streaming model has a chance to reshape news coverage. The upcoming online video format won’t be bound by a limited number of television licenses. This opens the door for overtly political news operations to enter the market.

With the proliferation of digital media, a multitude of new choices is likely to feed the audience’s polarization. Streaming news has already proved its worth by attracting both a broad and niche audience.

Streaming news can be viewed anywhere and offers timely delivery. Whether it’s election results, breaking news or reruns, viewers can customize their experience. In fact, a recent study showed that 85% of households subscribe to at least one streaming service.

Streaming allows news programs to archive content, making it accessible when viewers want it. News networks are betting that this will bolster their business. They have spent hundreds of millions of dollars to develop their streaming operations.

Free news streamers resemble cable’s style. Their main goal is to promote cable-quality news. But they also want to cut their subscribers’ cable subscriptions.

CNN, Fox, and MSNBC combined earned $3 billion in profits in 2020. These three networks repurposed programming from their broadcasts for their streaming platforms.

One reason for the success of the streaming model is that it makes news libraries more affordable. In the past, broadcasters had to keep a newspaper or magazine on hand to report the day’s happenings. Today’s DVRs allow for time-shifting, so a newscast can be watched whenever it suits the viewer.
