Breaking News
A breaking news story is a current issue or event that warrants the interruption of scheduled programming to report its details. It can be a serious and urgent matter, or a less important but still noteworthy issue that is of broad interest to the public.
During breaking news, national network television programs are interrupted temporarily in order to provide coverage of the breaking news story. The format of such a program typically involves an opening graphic that features music and is accompanied by a voiceover, followed by a news anchor and the introduction of the breaking news story itself.
The anchor will often announce that the story is a “breaking news report” and will remind viewers that they will receive more information on their local television station or on a network’s evening or morning news program if applicable. If there is no time in a program’s schedule to complete the full special report, a newscaster will re-join that program in progress or begin new programming as soon as possible.
Breaking news coverage is also commonly seen on radio stations, but the tenor of the announcement and theme music is different. In the United States, all-news radio stations have a strict policy of only using a breaking news theme when reporting on a significant breaking story or when they believe it is important for their listeners to know what is going on.
