Breaking news is the name of a breaking news story that elicits an immediate need for extensive and urgent coverage, or “cut-in”, on television or radio broadcasts. In the United States, these events often cause the broadcast of a special edition of the network’s regular newscast or the use of a newsflash, alert crawl or special report. In the past, such interruptions occurred only for highly significant and traumatic news events that triggered widespread concern and required a nationwide response. This is not unusual on 24-hour news channels, which have an anchor available for live interruption at any time.
