When news occurs that is so significant that it warrants an immediate interruption of non-news programming (or, in the case of a network broadcast, of regularly scheduled newscasts), a special report is produced. This is often called a Newsflash, but can also be known as a Special Report or Breaking News. If the event is of national significance, a countdown graphic or sequence is used to notify network affiliates to stand by. The station identification is typically overlaid during the report, rather than presented via lower thirds as with regular programming. This technique is less common now that 24-hour news networks are the norm.
