A breaking news story is a live report about an event of urgent importance that warrants immediate coverage and the interruption of non-news programs or, in the case of a national network, regularly scheduled newscasts. Breaking news reports typically start with a countdown or alert sequence, indicating to affiliated stations that the network is about to interrupt programming. Then, a news anchor or special report will appear to discuss the issue at hand. The breaking news report may last only a few minutes, or continue for hours or even days. A similar graphic called a Newsflash or Special Report, is also used for severe weather events.
